Turkmenistan Unveils New High-Speed Highway Linking Ashgabat

Turkmenistan has achieved a significant milestone in infrastructure advancement with the inauguration of the Ashgabat–Turkmenistan high-speed highway. The unveiling of the Mary–Turkmenistan section, officiated by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, marks the project's successful completion.

During the ceremony, President Berdimuhamedov stressed that enhancing road infrastructure is a crucial focus in the nation’s development agenda. He noted Turkmenistan’s increasing involvement in transport diplomacy and its objective to establish itself as a vital regional transit hub.

The newly finalized highway extends over 600 kilometers, linking the capital city, Ashgabat, with the eastern territories of Turkmenistan. Built in stages, earlier segments such as Ashgabat–Tedjen and Tedjen–Mary have already been operational.

This six-lane highway adheres to international quality and safety standards, creating a direct connection among the Akhal, Mary, and Lebap regions. The improved connectivity is anticipated to significantly boost mobility and regional collaboration.

A noteworthy feature of the initiative is that it was entirely executed by local enterprises, with construction overseen by the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan.

Officials indicated that the highway is set to decrease travel durations for both passengers and freight, enhance logistics productivity, and drive economic advancement across various regions. Furthermore, it will consolidate Turkmenistan’s role as a key transport corridor linking diverse nations and continents.

This initiative encapsulates the country’s larger vision of rejuvenating the historic Silk Road in a contemporary context, promoting sustainable transport growth and international connectivity.
