In a recent press interaction, US President Donald Trump defended Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, asserting he had no involvement in the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, despite contrasting findings from US intelligence agencies. Trump underscored the polarizing nature of Khashoggi, focusing on the vital economic relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
He expressed doubts about determining the crown prince’s connection to the incident, stating, "Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it." Trump further criticized reporters for probing such sensitive topics, reinforcing his staunch support for the Saudi leader.
Since the tragic event at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Trump has leaned on the crown prince’s denials, often prioritizing Riyadh’s perspective over US intelligence assessments. He characterized Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post, as highly controversial, suggesting a significant portion of the public viewed him unfavorably.
Highlighting the geopolitical and financial significance of Saudi Arabia, Trump reiterated the benefits of defense contracts and job creation linked to their partnership. He expressed reluctance to jeopardize what he termed the "massive amounts of money being poured into our country" by maintaining robust relations with Saudi Arabia.
Reflecting on earlier communications, Trump noted the crown prince had “totally denied any knowledge” during their discussions. While acknowledging that individuals close to him may have been involved in Khashoggi’s murder, he maintained uncertainty regarding the crown prince’s direct role.
Despite classified intelligence reports suggesting the crown prince’s participation, Trump has reiterated the importance of US-Saudi relations, branding the murder as a "terrible tragedy" while recognizing that the kingdom has denied any culpability. He pointed out that the CIA had not formally confirmed the crown prince's involvement, leaving ambiguity in his public comments.
Trump’s commitment to backing the crown prince has faced backlash, particularly from advocates calling for accountability in Khashoggi’s death. Throughout, he has emphasized the significance of US-Saudi economic relations, framing the incident in a manner that distances it from the crown prince.
