Trump Invites Family of Fallen Guard Soldier to White House Tribute

President Donald Trump on Sunday extended a heartfelt invitation to the family of Sarah Beckstrom, a West Virginia National Guard member who was fatally shot last week in Washington, D.C. The president said he spoke with her parents, who were “devastated” by the tragedy.

Beckstrom, 20, was killed during a shooting that also left her colleague, U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, critically injured. Both soldiers were deployed as part of the federalized security effort in the nation’s capital.

Trump said he discussed a visit to the White House for both families. “I told them, ‘When you’re ready, come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,’” he told reporters. “And likewise with Andrew, whether he recovers or not.”

The incident has touched communities in West Virginia deeply. Vigils have been held in their honor, including one at Webster County High School, where Beckstrom studied. Principal Gabriel Markle remembered her as a student who carried herself with “quiet strength, a contagious smile, and a positive energy that lifted those around her.” He added that she was “sweet, caring, and always willing to help others.”

Beckstrom, a recent graduate from Summersville, enlisted in the West Virginia National Guard in June 2023 and served with distinction as a military police officer. Wolfe, from Martinsburg, graduated from Musselman High School and joined service in February 2019.

The alleged shooter, a 29-year-old Afghan national, faces one count of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. The shooting prompted the Trump administration to suspend Afghan asylum decisions and temporarily halt visas for Afghan passport holders.

Funeral arrangements for Beckstrom are still being coordinated with her family by Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs. Wolfe remains hospitalized and continues to fight for his life.

During the vigil, Gov. Patrick Morrisey praised Beckstrom’s courage and dedication. “Though her life was far too short, she has left a lasting mark on her community,” he said, calling her a “favorite daughter of Webster County” whose kindness and service inspired those around her.

The community’s response, alongside the federal acknowledgment, highlights both the local grief and national recognition of the sacrifices made by these young soldiers.
