US President Donald Trump has announced plans to build the first new US oil refinery in 50 years, marking a major step in the country’s energy strategy. The refinery will be developed in Brownsville, Texas, with support from India’s Reliance Industries. The project is expected to increase oil processing capacity and support the administration’s goal of strengthening America’s energy sector.
Trump shared the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social. He said the new refinery will be built by a company called America First Refining. According to the president, the project represents a major achievement for the country’s energy industry and reflects his administration’s policy of “US energy dominance.” This policy focuses on increasing the production of oil, natural gas, and coal in the United States.
The announcement comes at a time when the White House is trying to address concerns about rising energy prices. Oil prices have been unstable due to tensions related to the ongoing war in Iran. Higher oil prices can lead to increased costs for gasoline and other fuels, which affects households and businesses. The administration is exploring several options to control prices, including releasing oil from emergency reserves and protecting oil tankers traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.
The planned US oil refinery in Brownsville will be capable of processing about 160,000 barrels of crude oil each day. The facility will mainly process shale oil produced in the United States. Shale oil production has grown rapidly in the country over the last 15 years, thanks to advances in drilling technology. This growth has helped the US become one of the world’s largest oil producers.
The refinery project was originally started by a company called Element Fuels. In June 2024, Element Fuels said it had completed site preparation and received permits needed to build the plant. However, the company’s website now redirects to America First Refining, the company mentioned by Trump in his announcement. America First Refining confirmed that it plans to start construction in the second quarter of this year.
The company also said it has already signed a long-term agreement to sell the fuel produced at the refinery. The agreement is a 20-year deal with Reliance Industries, one of India’s largest energy companies. Reliance operates some of the world’s biggest refineries and has significant experience in the global oil market. The partnership is expected to strengthen energy trade links between the United States and India.
Despite strong growth in oil production, the United States faces challenges in refining capacity. Many refineries in the country are decades old, and several have closed in recent years. This has created pressure on the remaining facilities, especially when fuel demand rises. Experts say building a new refinery could help ease this pressure and improve fuel supply.
However, constructing a new US oil refinery is not an easy task. Previous attempts to build new facilities have often failed due to high costs, strict environmental regulations, and complex approval processes. For example, in the mid-2000s, a $2.5 billion plan by Arizona Clean Fuels to build a refinery near Phoenix did not move forward because the company could not secure enough financial support.
Environmental groups have also raised concerns about the impact of new fossil fuel projects. They argue that building more oil refineries could increase greenhouse gas emissions and slow the transition to cleaner energy sources. Supporters of the project, on the other hand, say it will improve energy security, create jobs, and help stabilize fuel prices.
If the project moves forward as planned, the Brownsville facility will become the first brand-new US oil refinery built in half a century. The development could mark an important shift in the American energy industry, especially as global demand for fuel continues to evolve. The project will be closely watched by investors, energy companies, and policymakers around the world.
