Trump Acknowledges US Strike on Venezuelan Drug Dock

Post by : Mina Carter

President Donald Trump has affirmed that a significant explosion occurred at a dock in Venezuela known for loading boats with illicit drugs. He stated, "There was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs. We hit all the boats, and now we hit the area... it's the implementation area. That's where they implement, and that is no longer around."

While Trump did not reveal the specific target or the agency responsible, he was hesitant when asked if the CIA carried out the strike, saying, "I don't want to say that. I know exactly who it was but I don't want to say who it was."

A CNN report citing anonymous sources indicated that earlier this month, the CIA conducted a drone strike on a coastal port facility in Venezuela, aimed at a dock allegedly used by the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua for drug storage and shipment. This strike is part of America's ongoing strategy to disrupt drug trafficking routes associated with the Venezuelan government.

Trump has indicated prior authorization of CIA covert actions in Venezuela. Last week, he made ambiguous remarks about targeting a "big facility" but did not provide further specifics. Neither the Pentagon, the CIA, nor the White House have confirmed these assertions, choosing not to comment when approached by Reuters.

So far, the Venezuelan government has not released any statements on the incident. Initial rumors about the explosion have emerged, suggesting a potential link to a fire at the Primazol chemical plant in Zulia state. However, Primazol quickly clarified that the fire was contained and unrelated to the incident referred to by Trump. Residents reported hearing explosions and seeing flames, raising concerns about potential exposure to chlorine.

The communications ministry of Venezuela, overseeing press relations, did not respond to Reuters' inquiry about the alleged strike.

The Trump government has touted its accomplishments in targeting suspected drug trafficking vessels, with the Pentagon releasing footage of several interventions. The absence of clear statements from US security agencies on this recent incident has sparked debates regarding its covert nature, potentially limiting discussion on the matter.

Increasing pressure from the US on Nicolás Maduro's regime has been evident, with reports suggesting that new covert operations are imminent. These efforts primarily target military strikes against drug vessels, resulting in over 20 operations in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, alongside numerous casualties.

Earlier this month, military leaders discussed with lawmakers an incident from September which resulted in 11 deaths from an American strike. Congressional Democrats have raised concerns regarding the legality of a subsequent strike that killed survivors of the original attack, ordered by Admiral Frank Bradley.

Under the current administration, US military presence in the Caribbean has increased significantly, with more than 15,000 troops deployed to further combat drug trafficking and support actions against Maduro's government.
