LONG BEACH, CA – A cheerful Easter egg hunt on Sunday, April 5, took a dark twist for a family in California when they unearthed what appears to be human remains, likely belonging to a child, in DeForest Park.

The Long Beach Police Department received a call from the family later that evening after they made the shocking discovery of a skull and other bones interspersed with vibrant Easter eggs. Authorities quickly initiated an investigation, with the involvement of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office to assess the remains.

Lt. Benjamin Vargas informed the Los Angeles Times, "Every investigation is unique. The initial step involves verifying if the remains are human, which, to my knowledge, the Medical Examiner has yet to establish in this case. There is no set timeline for this process."

Bystanders recounted the eerie scene. Marc Zaldana, who was present in the vicinity, shared with KCBS, "Initially, we saw the family engaged in the Easter egg hunt, but they were quite shaken. It’s unimaginable."

As of Monday, April 6, Long Beach police were waiting for forensic anthropology insights. Should the remains be confirmed as human, identification could take anywhere from three weeks to much longer, depending on whether dental records, fingerprints, or DNA analysis is required. In situations involving decomposed or skeletal remains, this process can take months or even years.

This unsettling find has left the local community rattled, reminding everyone that even cherished holiday traditions can come with unforeseen difficulties. The investigation into the circumstances of these remains is ongoing.
