In a heartbreaking incident, a tourist from Singapore passed away while descending from Bhutan's renowned Tiger’s Nest Monastery, a revered landmark of the country. This tragic event during a guided group trek has left both fellow adventurers and tourism authorities in a state of shock.
The 40-year-old woman was part of a tour group consisting of 16 participants, organized through a package by a travel agency based in Singapore. The group arrived in Bhutan on May 26, gearing up for an array of sightseeing activities throughout the picturesque Himalayan nation.
As described by tour officials, the woman began to feel unwell during the hike. Despite her earlier signs of discomfort, she persevered and successfully reached the monastery, which stands over 3,000 meters above sea level, dramatically teetering on a cliff.
However, her condition deteriorated on the way down, prompting her to alert the guide. Swift emergency measures were executed, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation on-site. A fellow traveler, identified as a medical professional, also assisted in stabilizing her until emergency medical transport could be arranged.
She was urgently transported to Paro Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, her life could not be saved. Local authorities have initiated standard procedures, including a post-mortem examination, to clarify the cause of death.
This unfortunate incident has profoundly impacted those participating in the tour. A senior representative of the local travel operator expressed that this was one of his most distressing experiences in a 26-year career.
Condolences from Bhutanese authorities and the royal family have been conveyed to the victim's family. The travel agency is in communication with the woman's relatives and companions, coordinating with the Singaporean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant diplomatic representatives. This tragic event highlights the physical demands of trekking at high altitudes and underscores the need for health awareness when exploring mountainous areas.
