Kabul: A devastating earthquake rocked Afghanistan on Friday as a residential structure collapsed in Kabul, resulting in the tragic loss of at least eight lives and injuring a child, according to authorities.

The National Disaster Management Authority reported that the incident followed strong seismic tremors which caused significant damage to various buildings in the vicinity.

The quake, recorded at a magnitude of 5.9, originated in the Hindu Kush region, as per updates from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The epicenter was located approximately 177 kilometers underground, ensuring its effects were felt far beyond Afghanistan.

Witness accounts indicated that the tremors reached as far as New Delhi (India) and Islamabad (Pakistan), showcasing the earthquake's extensive reach.

Afghanistan's mountainous landscape makes it especially susceptible to natural disasters, especially earthquakes, which claim nearly 560 lives yearly on average in the nation.

Previously, a 6.3 magnitude quake in November led to over 27 deaths and extensive destruction, leaving many homes in ruins.

Rescue and assessment efforts are ongoing in the areas affected, with heightened concerns regarding the sturdiness of structures in earthquake-prone locations.
