A tragic fire broke out at a high-rise apartment complex in Tai Po, a northern suburb of Hong Kong, claiming the lives of at least 36 people and prompting the evacuation of hundreds of residents. Over 279 individuals were reported missing as rescue teams worked into Thursday morning to bring inhabitants to safety.
Officials stated that the blaze originated from external scaffolding on a 32-storey building, rapidly spreading to adjacent structures. The fire was exacerbated by high winds and the flammable nature of construction materials. As night fell, flames and thick smoke erupted from windows, hampering rescue efforts.
The complex, which includes eight buildings and approximately 2,000 apartments for nearly 4,800 residents, contained many elderly individuals. Temporary shelters have been set up for those displaced, with at least 29 hospitalized. Fire services encountered extreme challenges in access due to high temperatures and falling hazards.
Three men have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter connected to the incident. Investigators are probing whether the materials used on the exterior walls met fire safety standards, as highly flammable foam sheets were recovered from the site, potentially contributing to the fire's rapid escalation.
Tragically, a 37-year-old firefighter lost his life while battling the blaze, and another firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. The response included over 200 fire trucks and 100 ambulances deployed to control the situation and aid residents.
Hong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee, assured that disaster relief efforts would be a priority, although he noted that upcoming Legislative Council elections might be influenced. Chinese President Xi Jinping extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and advocated for measures to reduce such disasters.
This incident raises significant concerns about the safety of bamboo scaffolding used in Hong Kong's construction sector. Despite modernization efforts, its continued use has drawn scrutiny. Earlier this year, the government confirmed plans to phase out bamboo scaffolding in public works due to safety apprehensions.
This tragedy marks one of the deadliest fires in Hong Kong in many years, reminiscent of the November 1996 incident in Kowloon that resulted in 41 fatalities. Ongoing searches for missing persons and support for the affected residents continue.
