Toronto Man Charged In Suspected Hate Motivated Threats

A 32-year-old Toronto man is facing multiple criminal charges after a suspected hate-motivated incident in Scarborough that police say involved threats directed at individuals perceived to be Palestinian.

According to Toronto police, officers were called to the area of Lawrence Avenue East and Pharmacy Avenue on June 5, 2026, following reports of an incident at a local business. Investigators allege that a man attended the business and threatened several individuals during the encounter.

Police said the victims were targeted because the suspect allegedly perceived them to be Palestinian. Authorities also reported that the suspect was in possession of a weapon during the incident. No serious physical injuries have been reported by investigators.

Following the investigation, police arrested 32-year-old Shafik Al Jawhari of Toronto. He has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon, one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, and one count of failing to comply with a probation order. He also faces two counts of uttering threats to cause death.

The allegations have not been tested in court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the legal process.

Police said the accused was scheduled to appear in bail court on June 6 following his arrest. Court proceedings are expected to determine whether he will remain in custody or be released while the case moves through the justice system.

Investigators have classified the case as a suspected hate-motivated offence. In Canada, a criminal act may be considered hate-motivated when evidence suggests that a victim or group was targeted because of characteristics such as race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, or other protected identities. The determination of whether hate motivation played a role can become an important factor during the investigation and any subsequent court proceedings.

The incident comes amid ongoing discussions across Canada regarding hate-related incidents and community safety. Law enforcement agencies and community organizations have continued to stress the importance of reporting threats, harassment, and acts of violence to ensure incidents are investigated thoroughly.

Toronto police have not released additional details regarding the circumstances of the alleged confrontation. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and review information related to the case.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has additional information to contact Toronto police. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.

The investigation remains active, and police have indicated that additional information could be released as the case progresses. The outcome of the court process will determine the next steps in the matter and whether the charges proceed to trial.
