Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has sparked discussions in the Indian cricket community by likening the young prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, advocating for his inclusion in the national team.
In response to Suryavanshi’s outstanding performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Tharoor praised the 14-year-old’s unique cricketing skills on social media. He remarked, “The last time a fourteen-year-old displayed such remarkable talent, it was Sachin Tendulkar — and we all know the heights he reached. Why not Vaibhav Suryavanshi for India?” while tagging notable cricket figures.
A Record-Breaking Achievement
Suryavanshi left a mark during a Plate League match, becoming the youngest player ever to secure a century in men’s List A cricket at the age of 14 years and 272 days. His monumental inning of 100, achieved off just 36 balls, made him the fourth-fastest Indian to score a List A century.
In his seventh List A match, he amassed 190 runs from 84 balls, hitting 16 fours and 15 sixes at a remarkable strike rate of 226.19.
This performance also saw Suryavanshi beat AB de Villiers’ record for the fastest 150 in men’s List A cricket, reaching 150 in a mere 59 balls.
Remarkable Team Performance
Bihar achieved an astonishing total of 574/6, the highest ever in List A cricket history. Captain Sakibul Gani contributed with a blistering 128 off 40 balls, while Ayush Loharuka scored 116 off 56 balls. Arunachal Pradesh was bowled out for just 177, resulting in a comprehensive victory for Bihar by 398 runs.
Consistent Excellence
Suryavanshi’s stellar innings was not an isolated incident. Earlier this month, he hit an unbeaten 108 off 61 balls against Maharashtra in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, securing his position as the youngest centurion in that tournament’s history.
His prowess is evident at the youth level as well; during the Under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai, he made 171 runs off 95 balls against the UAE, just short of Ambati Rayudu’s youth record. Additionally, he scored a century against Australia’s Under-19 team in a Youth Test in Brisbane.
A Meteoric Ascent
Suryavanshi’s fame continues to rise. In 2025, at just 13 years old, he became the youngest player chosen in an IPL auction, later scoring a dramatic 101 off 38 balls for the Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans. In IPL 2025, he accumulated 252 runs across seven matches with a strike rate of 206.55.
He has maintained his impressive form during youth tours in England and Australia, scoring 355 runs at a strike rate of 174.01 in England alone. Across 15 youth ODIs, he boasts an average over 51, including two centuries and three half-centuries.
With records that highlight his extraordinary talent and comparisons being drawn to legends, Suryavanshi’s rapid rise positions him as a key figure in discussions regarding the future of Indian cricket.
