In preparation for the 2026 academic year, Thailand is intensifying its initiatives to bolster school safety and enhance educational standards. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s administration is collaborating with various agencies to upgrade infrastructure and alleviate parents' financial burdens as the new term approaches.

According to Deputy government spokesperson Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, the majority of schools governed by the Office of the Basic Education Commission will reopen on May 18, 2026, with a few institutions starting as early as May 14. Inspectors are currently evaluating schools nationwide to ensure compliance with essential safety standards in electrical systems, classrooms, playgrounds, educational tools, and staff accommodations.

The Ministry of Education has initiated workshops to push forward five key educational objectives through the "All for Education" program, which promotes collaboration among teachers, educational staff, and multiple sectors to create a responsive education system tailored to students' and communities' actual needs.

On May 15, the Ministry of Education plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with 18 different agencies to create a comprehensive safety system for students as part of the government’s Quick Win initiatives. This collaboration includes the Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Interior, the Royal Thai Police, and social welfare entities, all focused on enhancing preventive measures, emergency support, and student protection across the nation.

To further ease the financial burden on families during the back-to-school period, the Ministry of Commerce is launching the “Back To School 2026” campaign, featuring discounts of up to 86 percent on over 1,000 educational products including school uniforms, textbooks, learning materials, and IT devices.

These discounts will be accessible at department stores, government-affiliated shops, and online platforms throughout Thailand from April 30 to May 31, 2026, potentially saving families around 300 million baht during the school reopening period.

The Cabinet has also approved increased student subsidies for the 2026 fiscal year, covering both the second semester of the 2025 academic session and the first semester of the 2026 academic year. This enhanced financial aid applies across all educational levels from pre-primary to secondary education.

This financial support will cover essentials such as school uniforms, learning materials, and additional assistance for smaller rural schools, all aimed at ensuring equitable access to education and lessening financial strains on families.

Officials stated that the comprehensive education reform and safety initiative aims to create safer and more supportive learning environments for Thai students. They are optimistic that improved infrastructure, robust safety systems, and financial aid will usher in long-term educational progress and better opportunities for youth throughout the country.
