In a bid to bolster road safety for the Songkran Festival 2026, Thailand is implementing heightened measures with directives aimed at provincial governors. This initiative aims to protect the public during one of the nation’s busiest travel times.

Led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the initiative stresses the importance of a collaborative approach across various sectors to mitigate accidents and ensure a smooth travel experience nationwide.

A focused campaign dubbed the “dangerous period” will run from April 10 to April 16, concentrating on accident prevention, stringent law enforcement, and raising public awareness. The goal is to secure safer journeys for travelers headed back to their hometowns and those visiting from afar.

On the opening day of this campaign, April 10, statistics showed 135 accidents occurred, causing 132 injuries and claiming 20 lives. Major contributing factors were identified as speeding and abrupt lane changes, with motorcycles involved in over 70% of these incidents.

To enhance safety, officials are mandated to rigorously enforce traffic regulations, combat drunk driving, and establish convenient checkpoints. These spots will offer water, snacks, basic medical supplies, and resting areas for travelers undertaking long journeys, all while maintaining traffic flow.

Moreover, community checkpoints will be set up on local routes to keep an eye on hazardous behaviors and help prevent accidents at the grassroots level. Addressing fuel shortage worries, authorities have assured the public of a stable fuel supply nationwide.

With high temperatures forecasted throughout the festival, citizens are cautioned to be aware of heat-related symptoms like fatigue and heatstroke. Emergency services, including hotline 1669 and other safety contacts, will be operational around the clock to address any accidents or health crises promptly.
