Thailand has released 18 Cambodian soldiers who had been detained since July, following a renewed ceasefire agreement between the two nations. This ceasefire, which took effect at noon on Saturday, puts an end to nearly three weeks of violent clashes that led to at least 101 deaths and displaced over half a million individuals from both countries.
The soldiers were in Thai custody for 155 days and were handed over to Cambodian officials at a border checkpoint on Wednesday morning. Although the transfer was initially scheduled for Tuesday, it was postponed due to Thailand's claims that Cambodia violated certain ceasefire terms—a charge Cambodia vehemently denied.
Thailand’s Foreign Ministry stated that the soldiers were treated with respect and in accordance with international humanitarian laws during their detention. This statement aims to alleviate any concerns regarding the treatment of the detained soldiers while in Thai custody.
The clashes intensified earlier this month following the breakdown of a previous ceasefire agreement that was negotiated in July by international leaders, including representatives from the United States and Malaysia. Despite previous efforts to quell the conflict, fighting reignited, characterized by artillery exchanges, rocket attacks, and the deployment of fighter jets.
The latest ceasefire agreement represents a positive development, aiming to restore peace and prevent further civilian suffering. Both Thailand and Cambodia are evidently dedicated to upholding this new accord and pursuing a long-term resolution to their border disputes.
