Thailand and Australia have reiterated their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and fostering cooperation in key areas like security, economic growth, digital governance, and the fight against transnational crime. This dialogue occurred during a meeting between Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilapraphan and Australian Ambassador Angela Macdonald at Government House in Bangkok on May 14, 2026.

During this meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn expressed gratitude to the Australian Ambassador for her contributions in advancing relations between the two nations throughout her tenure. The Australian delegation acknowledged the deep-rooted partnership between Thailand and Australia, emphasizing collaboration in military affairs, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people connections.

A focal point of the discussions was Thailand's ambition to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) by 2028. The Thai government is currently undergoing necessary technical evaluations for the application. Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn extended his appreciation to Australia for its ongoing support through the Mekong-Australia Partnership framework, aimed at enhancing governance, technology, and institutional standards.

Australia commended Thailand’s initiatives in utilizing modern technology to advance public administration and governmental services. The discussions underscored the increasing significance of digital transformation and innovation in aligning Thailand with global governance and economic benchmarks. Pakorn, an alumnus of an Australian university, also valued the Australian government's scholarship support via the Mekong-Australia Partnership initiative.

Another crucial topic was the rising menace of transnational crime, particularly online fraud and cybercrimes that impact both nations. Both parties recognized the urgency for enhanced cooperation in intelligence sharing, law enforcement efforts, and public awareness campaigns to more effectively counter these issues. Thai officials also highlighted the essentiality of promoting digital literacy among citizens to mitigate the risk of scams and online fraud.

The two nations reviewed the progress made under the Joint Plan of Action for the Thailand-Australia Strategic Partnership during the 2022 to 2025 period, noting advancements in economic collaboration, regional security, education, and stronger people-to-people ties. Both governments expressed their intent to further expand cooperation in mutually beneficial areas.

The meeting concluded with Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn wishing Ambassador Angela Macdonald well as her diplomatic term in Thailand nears its conclusion later this month. Both sides reiterated their commitment to maintaining strong cooperation and fortifying strategic ties between Thailand and Australia in the coming years.
