In a commanding display, Iga Swiatek triumphed over American fifth seed Jessica Pegula with a score of 6-1, 6-2, earning her place in the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Italian Open held in Rome on Wednesday.

The Polish fourth seed and six-time Grand Slam champion launched the match impressively, racing to an initial 5-0 lead before Pegula managed to win a game, preventing a total first-set whitewash. Swiatek showcased her dominance, conceding only three games throughout the match.

The second set mirrored the first, with Swiatek maintaining relentless pressure from the baseline and comfortably securing the match. She recorded 15 winners, significantly outpacing Pegula's six, emphasizing her command on the court.

This victory marks Swiatek's first win against a top-10 opponent in 2023, representing a positive shift in her form following her recent collaboration with former Rafael Nadal coach Francisco Roig.

Reflecting on her performance, Swiatek expressed how confident and in control she felt from the outset, pleased with her ability to implement her strategy effectively under pressure.

This achievement is a crucial milestone as she gears up for the French Open, which commences on May 24, with aspirations of clinching her fifth Roland Garros title and enhancing her clay court record.

Following the early surprise exit of world number one Aryna Sabalenka, who was defeated by Sorana Cirstea, Swiatek’s route to the final has become clearer, presenting a prime opportunity to secure her first clay-court title since her triumph in the 2024 French Open.

In the semi-finals, she will face the victor of the match featuring Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina.
