In the wake of a tragic crane collapse at a high-speed rail construction site in Si Khiew, Nakhon Ratchasima, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has initiated both civil and criminal lawsuits against Italian-Thai Development (ITD). This incident occurred on January 14, 2026, when a crane from the Thai-Chinese rail project fell onto a train, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.
The government has acted promptly, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, ordering a fact-finding panel to assess safety protocols and ascertain the accident's cause, with a report due in 15 days.
Compensation will be provided by both SRT and ITD to the impacted parties, with families of the deceased set to receive 1.34 million THB each, and injured passengers’ medical expenses fully covered until recovery. Claims for property loss or damages can also be filed.
Acting SRT Governor Anan Phonimdang emphasized the importance of strict safety compliance from both ITD and SRT on all projects. Measures have been implemented for contractors to communicate effectively with station managers, stopping work when trains are near construction sites.
The affected train carriages have been removed from the tracks, and the damaged crane will be taken out, with rail repairs anticipated to last about seven days. Future safety enhancements will see the installation of sensors and CCTV at construction sites for better monitoring.
Legally, the SRT has filed charges related to the tragic deaths and is pursuing civil damages for public property damage and reputational harm. Further legal actions will hinge on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding construction safety practices, leading to calls for stricter regulations and enhanced oversight of Thailand’s high-speed rail initiatives.
