Sri Lanka Jails Man for Hoarding Petrol During Fuel Shortage Crisis

A man in Sri Lanka has been sent to jail for hoarding petrol during a serious fuel shortage. The incident has gained attention as the country struggles with limited fuel supplies due to rising global tensions.

The 48-year-old man was arrested and later admitted that he had stored four litres of petrol. He first claimed the fuel was for his lawnmower. However, authorities said he was trying to sell it on the black market. A magistrate in Nikaweratiya, a town about 125 kilometres from Colombo, sentenced him to three weeks in jail. He was also fined 1,500 Sri Lankan rupees, which is about $5.

The case comes at a time when Sri Lanka is facing a major fuel shortage. The government has introduced strict fuel rationing rules. People are allowed to buy fuel only on certain days, often every other day, to manage the limited supply. Officials say diesel stocks may last until mid-May, while petrol could last only slightly longer.

The fuel crisis has become worse due to global issues. Prices in Sri Lanka have increased by nearly one-third after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. These events have disrupted oil supplies and affected many countries around the world.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is working to secure more fuel for the country. He recently held talks with a Russian official to explore support. Russia has said it is ready to help Sri Lanka deal with the fuel crisis caused by the ongoing conflict.

The government continues to warn people against hoarding fuel and selling it illegally. Authorities say strict action will be taken to ensure fair distribution and to prevent further shortages
