AFCON Final Mayhem as Senegal Exits Field; FIFA Responds

In a stunning turn of events during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, the Senegal team walked off the field in protest, leading FIFA to issue strong criticism. Although Senegal secured a 1-0 victory, the match was overshadowed by turmoil and disputes.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his dismay over the actions of the Senegalese players, coaches, and supporters, denouncing them as “unacceptable” for an international final. In a social media post, he asserted that such behavior “must be condemned and never repeated.”

Tension escalated in stoppage time when Senegal believed they had scored a critical goal, only for it to be disqualified due to a foul call. Shortly thereafter, Morocco was awarded a penalty following a video review that found Senegalese star Brahim Diaz was fouled during a corner kick.

In response to the penalty situation, Senegal's coach Pape Thiaw orchestrated a walk-off to avoid the penalty kick, resulting in a 15-minute delay. This protest incited clashes between Senegal supporters and the police within the stadium, further complicating the situation.

Infantino stated, “Leaving the field is unacceptable, and football must not tolerate violence.” He emphasized the need for teams to respect match officials and compete fairly, warning that anything less jeopardizes the spirit of the sport.

Upon resuming play, Brahim Diaz’s penalty kick was poorly executed and saved by Senegal's Edouard Mendy, earning it a place among the worst penalties in football history. Diaz later took to social media to apologize to Moroccan fans.

Senegal clinched the championship with a decisive goal from Pape Gueye in the 94th minute, marking their first Africa Cup of Nations title. While congratulating Senegal, Infantino highlighted the importance of setting a positive precedent for fans globally.

In response to the incident, Morocco’s football federation, under the leadership of Fouzi Lekjaa, announced plans to take legal action through CAF and FIFA, asserting that Senegal’s protest hindered the match’s flow and player performance.

CAF also deemed the occurrences as unacceptable and is reviewing match footage to determine any potential disciplinary action. Senegal's coach, Thiaw, may face serious penalties, which could influence future participation in African competitions or the FIFA World Cup.

Moroccan coach Walid Regragui called the walk-off “shameful,” indicating it tarnished the image of African football internationally.
