Saudi Coalition Cautions Yemen's STC Against Military Actions in Hadramout

Post by : Sean Carter

Yemen’s protracted conflict has reached a critical juncture, as the Saudi-led coalition has issued a stern warning to the Southern Transitional Council (STC). The coalition expressed a firm intent to counter any military initiatives in Hadramout that jeopardize peace efforts and endanger civilians.

This warning follows grave security concerns raised by Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council. Its leader, Rashad al-Alimi, appealed to the coalition to safeguard civilians from alleged abuses by armed factions affiliated with the STC, highlighting apprehensions that recent power dynamics could spiral into renewed violence in southern Yemen.

The STC, which is Yemen’s prominent separatist faction in the south, enjoys backing from the UAE. In recent weeks, it has extended its influence across southern regions, ousting the internationally recognized Saudi-backed government from its stronghold in Aden. This swift takeover has sparked alarm among regional stakeholders wary of disrupting fragile peace talks.

Recently, STC forces expanded their presence into additional areas, including parts of Hadramout and Mahra. In response, Saudi Arabia has urged the faction to withdraw, a request the STC has rebuffed, insisting instead on pursuing what they termed security operations in these eastern territories. This defiance has heightened tensions among former allies in the anti-Houthi coalition.

Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman directly appealed to STC leaders, urging them to embrace Saudi-Emirati mediation and negotiate their differences. He emphasized the necessity for STC forces to peacefully return captured camps to local administrations.

The minister reiterated that Yemen’s “southern issue” needs resolution through consensus and trust among Yemenis, warning that reliance on force would only aid Yemen’s adversaries and exacerbate internal divides. His comments echo escalating fears that internal conflicts could derail broader political reconciliation efforts.

Yemen’s war has ravaged the nation for over a decade, leaving millions dependent on humanitarian assistance and pushing the country towards collapse. Renewed clashes, particularly in relatively stable regions like Hadramout, could drastically worsen the humanitarian landscape and hinder peace prospects.

The Saudi-led coalition remains committed to de-escalation, yet it has made it clear that safeguarding civilian lives is non-negotiable. The STC's decision to prioritize dialogue over military action may significantly influence the future trajectory of Yemen's quest for stability.
