Saudi Arabia has officially announced the resumption of Umrah visa services starting from May 31, bringing relief and excitement to millions of Muslim pilgrims planning to visit the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. The announcement comes after the completion of this year’s Hajj season preparations and marks the beginning of the new Umrah season for 2026-27.
Saudi authorities confirmed that international pilgrims will once again be able to apply for Umrah visas through approved travel agencies and online platforms. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah also released the official schedule for the upcoming Umrah season, allowing travel companies and pilgrims to begin planning their religious journeys in advance.
According to officials, the reopening of visa services is part of Saudi Arabia’s wider effort to improve pilgrimage management and increase the number of visitors arriving for religious tourism every year. The kingdom has invested heavily in transport systems, airport facilities, crowd management technology, and accommodation services near Islam’s holiest sites to make the pilgrimage experience smoother and safer for visitors from around the world.
The Umrah pilgrimage is different from Hajj because it can be performed at almost any time of the year. Millions of Muslims travel to Mecca and Medina annually for Umrah to perform religious rituals and prayers. The reopening of visa services is especially important for countries with large Muslim populations, including India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and several African nations.
Saudi officials said digital systems have also been upgraded for the new season. Pilgrims will be able to complete many travel and permit procedures online, reducing paperwork and waiting times. Authorities are encouraging pilgrims to use authorised operators and official government platforms to avoid fraud or fake travel offers.
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has also issued fresh guidelines related to travel documentation, accommodation bookings, transportation arrangements, and health requirements. Pilgrims have been advised to follow all official rules and apply early because demand for Umrah travel is expected to rise significantly after the reopening announcement.
Travel agencies in several countries have already reported a sharp increase in inquiries following the announcement. Industry experts believe the new Umrah season could see one of the highest international pilgrim turnouts in recent years, supported by easier visa procedures and improved travel connectivity.
Saudi Arabia has been working under its Vision 2030 programme to expand religious tourism and diversify its economy beyond oil. Increasing the number of Umrah and Hajj visitors is considered one of the major goals of the programme. Officials hope improved infrastructure and modern services will help attract millions more pilgrims annually in the coming years.
The announcement has been welcomed by Muslim communities worldwide, many of whom had been waiting for confirmation of the new Umrah calendar and visa dates to begin planning their spiritual journeys.
