Moscow Conducts Extensive Drone and Missile Assault on Ukraine

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In a significant overnight onslaught, Russia targeted Ukraine on Friday with hundreds of drones and numerous missiles, as reported by Ukrainian officials. This assault resulted in the death of at least four individuals and left 25 others injured in the capital, Kyiv.

The attack reportedly comprised 13 ballistic missiles, 22 cruise missiles, and 242 drones, including the hypersonic Oreshnik missile. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted considerable damage in various parts of the capital, mentioning that the Qatari Embassy was affected. He highlighted Qatar's pivotal role in facilitating prisoner exchanges between both nations.

Russia’s defense ministry argued that this strike was in response to a purported Ukrainian assault on President Vladimir Putin’s residence. Ukraine has firmly denied such allegations, and US President Donald Trump stated that there was no legitimacy to those claims.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha of Ukraine condemned this aggressive act, emphasizing it as a critical threat to European security. He described the strike's proximity to NATO and EU borders as a test for the transatlantic alliance and dismissed Russia’s narrative as mere “hallucinations.”

The attack followed closely on the heels of warnings from Zelensky, who indicated that Russia was gearing up for a major offensive, potentially capitalizing on the hazardous freezing conditions in Kyiv.

The EU's chief diplomat characterized Russia's deployment of the Oreshnik missile as a notable escalation in the ongoing conflict.

What is the Oreshnik Missile?

The Oreshnik is a hypersonic missile with a speed of 13,000 km/h, which is almost ten times the speed of sound. Russian authorities assert that intercepting this missile is highly challenging and that even with a conventional warhead, its destructive capability rivals that of a nuclear weapon.

With a range reported to be up to 5,500 kilometers, Russia's missile forces chief claims it can reach the majority of Europe. This event marks the second deployment of the Oreshnik, with its initial use occurring in November 2024 during an attack on Dnipro, Ukraine.

This latest offensive contributes to the ongoing daily assaults on Ukraine amidst persistent diplomatic efforts to achieve a breakthrough in the conflict, which remains the deadliest in Europe since World War II. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022 and continues unabated.
