Defiant Lower Order Keeps South Africa in the Test Hunt

Post by : Mara Collins

South Africa's tailenders made crucial strides against Pakistan, featuring a pivotal partnership between spinners Senuran Muthusamy and Keshav Maharaj that yielded fifty runs. Arriving at a precarious 235 for 8, trailing by 98 runs, they took the battle to Pakistan's bowling attack, making the encounter all the more gripping.

The first session saw Pakistan in command, claiming four scalps for just 50 runs. Making his debut, Asif Afridi delivered an outstanding performance, snatching his first Test five-for. With impeccable line and length on a challenging pitch, Afridi kept the South African batsmen under pressure, although Pakistan let slip chances through three dropped catches and a missed stumping.

South Africa's last recognized batters, Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne, were dispatched early on. Verreynne edged a delivery from Afridi to the keeper, while Stubbs, starting from 68, scored a mere eight more runs before falling victim to Afridi's bowling. Simon Harmer followed shortly after, marking Afridi as the oldest cricketer at 38 years and 299 days to take five wickets on his Test debut.

Steadying the innings from the morning, Muthusamy displayed calmness and prowess. After the top order's fall, he played with aggression, executing sweeps and attacking shots. Initially given out lbw off Sajid Khan, a review showed an inside edge, allowing him to stay at the crease.

Pakistan attempted to find swing with the second new ball, placing hopes on Shaheen Shah Afridi, but Marco Jansen made the most of pace to crack through mid-off. Afridi's bowling stint ended after 19 overs, and Noman Ali joined him, snaring his first wicket by trapping Jansen lbw upon review. Muthusamy and Maharaj kept up the assault, making daring moves to pile on the vital runs.

The duo's aggressive approach capitalized on the looseness of the Pakistani fielders, particularly challenging Noman Ali and taking on Sajid Khan. Their bold batting not only kept South Africa alive in the match but also prevented Pakistan from extending their lead effortlessly.

This resilient partnership has shifted the balance slightly in South Africa's favor. By narrowing Pakistan's first-innings lead and showing a mix of aggression and strategy, Muthusamy and Maharaj have ensured a closely contested Test match remains on the cards.
