The State of Qatar has raised concerns that the persistent closure of the Strait of Hormuz may instigate a significant global economic and security crisis.
During a Thursday briefing at the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative, emphasized how the disruption of this vital maritime route since March has posed severe economic challenges for Gulf nations and the global community.
The media session focused on an upcoming UN Security Council resolution addressing the strategic waterway, with participation from representatives including the United States and Gulf Cooperation Council members such as Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.
Sheikha Alya reported that nearly 20% of worldwide oil and liquefied natural gas trade has been impacted by the closure, causing significant disruptions to international supply chains and leaving over 20,000 seafarers stranded at sea.
Qatar warned that the prevailing situation is threatening global energy security, economic stability, and humanitarian conditions, while adding to regional tensions. It stated that this crisis poses a severe risk to international peace and security.
According to Sheikha Alya, ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is a collective responsibility for the international community and must align with established maritime law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Furthermore, Qatar expressed its hope that UN member states will lend support to the proposed resolution that aims to protect shipping routes and guarantee safe navigation across the strategic waterway.
