Strengthening Qatar-UAE Relations: Key Agreements in Abu Dhabi

The Qatar-UAE Joint Supreme Committee for Cooperation convened its seventh session in Abu Dhabi, reinforcing their commitment to strategic collaboration across vital sectors.

This session was co-chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, alongside Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, with senior officials from both nations in attendance.

The meeting underscored the historical ties and shared vision that bind Qatar and the UAE, emphasizing a shift towards a more integrated cooperation aimed at fostering economic progress, strengthening Gulf ties, and ensuring regional stability.

Participants reviewed various cooperation areas, aligning on the necessity of transforming discussions into actionable projects that yield concrete outcomes.

Economic Collaboration and Investment Focus

The nations affirmed that enhancing economic integration is crucial for bolstering competitiveness and diversifying growth sources while promoting sustainable advancement.

They committed to improving the business landscape, fostering mutual investments, and encouraging collaborations between public and private sectors, strengthening their roles as prominent investment centers regionally and globally.

Recent advancements in financial partnerships, including discussions on a Memorandum of Understanding between the finance ministries, were celebrated, alongside ongoing negotiations regarding a double taxation agreement.

Potential collaborations between the Qatar Investment Authority and Mubadala Investment Company in shared interests were also explored.

An emphasis was placed on the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement as a fundamental step in establishing a stable and transparent environment that builds investor confidence and nurtures economic partnerships.

Advancements in Trade, Technology, and AI

In trade, both nations resolved to enhance cooperation between their chambers of commerce, support trade missions, and continuously share economic data to facilitate business growth.

Conversations also steered towards future-focused economic sectors such as artificial intelligence, digital evolution, cloud computing, and cybersecurity, which are pivotal for upcoming growth and innovation.

Agreements were made for sharing knowledge in digital policies and AI applications, aiding in the shift towards knowledge-driven economies.

Transport Infrastructure and Food Security

The discussion included enhancing connectivity across air, sea, and land transport, along with strengthening cooperation across ports and industrial zones to optimize supply chains.

Both parties recognized the necessity of improving information exchange to tackle challenges and facilitate better decision-making.

In terms of food security, Qatar and the UAE pledged to bolster cooperation in agriculture and livestock, ensuring the availability of crucial goods during crises.

Humanitarian and Social Cooperation

The session also extended to areas such as health care, education, labor, culture, and humanitarian efforts, underscoring the need for ongoing collaboration and exchange of expertise to bolster these sectors.

Agreements to Fortify Ties

During the session, multiple agreements and MoUs were ratified, signaling the deepening partnership between Qatar and the UAE.

  • Agreement for the Promotion and Protection of Investments

  • Two MoUs on agriculture and food security cooperation

  • MoU on municipal cooperation between Doha Municipality and Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport

At the conclusion, both nations reiterated their commitment to implementing the agreed-upon outcomes and enhancing Qatar-UAE relations through purposeful cooperation.

The minutes of the session were officially signed by representatives from both sides, indicating their intent to convene for the eighth session in Qatar at a later determined date.
