The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) recently unveiled the findings of a public survey that highlights the effectiveness of its single-use plastics initiative, initiated in 2020 to curb plastic usage and advocate for sustainable practices.
This program has shown impressive results, having successfully averted the use of over 470 million plastic bags, with a remarkable 95 percent reduction in usage at key retail stores. Additionally, around 267 million plastic bottles have been gathered through home collection services and more than 170 smart recycling stations spread throughout the emirate.
These initiatives have significantly decreased plastic pollution, preventing approximately 7,386 tonnes of plastic waste from entering landfills. The environmental benefits are substantial, equating to the emissions reduction achieved by removing 185,000 gasoline-powered cars from the roads for a year.
To gauge public sentiment, EAD conducted a survey with over 5,000 participants representing 126 nationalities. The data revealed an impressive understanding and backing from the community; 96 percent of respondents acknowledged the ecological dangers posed by plastic, while the same percentage affirmed their dedication to minimizing plastic use through straightforward, daily practices.
Furthermore, the survey indicated a rise in health consciousness, with 95 percent of participants aware of the health risks associated with plastic materials. Meanwhile, 89 percent expressed contentment with EAD's awareness initiatives, commending their lucidity and impact.
The public’s preference for sustainable options was also evident, with around 89 percent agreeing that prices for eco-friendly bags are fair, and 88 percent supporting the use of collected fees for environmental conservation projects. Notably, 95 percent believe the existing policies and regulations are effective, indicating strong confidence in the agency's efforts.
EAD affirmed that these findings reinforce the UAE’s overarching environmental objectives, particularly following the recent national ban on single-use plastics. The results reflect a favorable change in public practices, with 93 percent of participants reporting overall satisfaction with the survey.
The agency underscored that community education and engagement will remain essential in bolstering sustainability initiatives and diminishing plastic waste across the UAE.
