Federal immigration officials report that their facility in Portland has faced nightly attacks for over 100 consecutive nights. Limited support from local law enforcement, influenced by city leadership directives, has intensified concerns over officer safety and the escalating unrest near the building.
Escalating Attacks on ICE Facility
Cammila Wamsley, director of Portland’s ICE office, described the attacks as increasingly organized and dangerous. Protesters have moved beyond chants and signs to using:
Bottle rockets
Rocks breaking windows
Lasers aimed at officers’ eyes
Barricades to block vehicles
Some demonstrators have followed ICE staff members home and doxxed at least six employees.
“Later, towards the evening and around dark, there are a lot of folks that come up dressed in all black… They are here to wreak havoc. They’ll block our cars, throw paint, damage property, and even try to follow our folks home,” Wamsley said.
Limited Police Intervention
Wamsley expressed frustration over the limited ability of federal staff to respond to attacks outside the facility due to jurisdictional restrictions. She noted that crowds can grow rapidly, from 50 to 1,000 protesters within 30 minutes, creating dangerous situations for the relatively small federal security presence.
The Portland Police Department has reportedly been slow to respond—or sometimes not at all—citing guidance from the mayor and city council. Wamsley highlighted the discrepancy in response compared to other areas of the city.
Federal Staff Remain Committed
Despite the unrest, ICE personnel emphasized their dedication to enforcing immigration laws.
“The people who work here are here to serve the American public. We come to work every day. We do our job the way we have been doing it, and we’ll continue to do that,” Wamsley stated.
Todd Rignel, assistant special agent for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Oregon, said federal authorities are monitoring Antifa-linked groups believed to be organizing much of the unrest. He noted that multiple federal agencies, including the FBI, ATF, DEA, and IRS, are involved in responding to the situation.
National Response and Security Measures
Former President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy 200 National Guard troops to Portland to support immigration authorities, particularly near areas prone to protests. The deployment aims to ensure public safety and protect federal facilities amid rising tensions.
Nationwide Pattern of Attacks
Portland is not the only city facing violence against ICE facilities. A recent attack in Dallas on September 24 resulted in the deaths of two detainees and hospitalization of another after a gunman opened fire and later died by self-inflicted gunshot. Authorities reported that shell casings recovered at the scene bore an “ANTI-ICE” message, highlighting a growing nationwide pattern of targeted attacks.
Tensions Between Federal Enforcement and Local Policy
The Portland ICE office continues to operate amid challenges, highlighting the tension between federal enforcement responsibilities and local political policies that influence police intervention. Officials remain committed to public service despite the ongoing threats.
