Ponting Assures Support for Kohli and Rohit After ODI Setback

Post by : Mara Collins

Ricky Ponting, the former Australian cricket captain, has advised fans and critics alike not to dismiss India’s veteran players, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, following their seven-wicket defeat against Australia in the opening ODI in Perth. Even amidst a rocky start, Ponting maintains that both athletes possess the necessary skills and experience to make meaningful contributions to India’s 50-over squad ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

The three-match ODI series proceeds in Adelaide on Thursday, culminating in Sydney on Saturday. Ponting pointed out that the batting conditions in Adelaide are favorable; however, Kohli and Rohit will be challenged by some of the top white-ball bowlers, resulting in a demanding match.

Having returned to play exclusively in 50-over games after securing the Champions Trophy earlier this year, neither player had a remarkable performance against Australia. Rohit was quickly dismissed by Josh Hazlewood, while Kohli received a duck against Mitchell Starc. Nonetheless, Ponting stressed that their abilities and past achievements should not be overlooked.

Ponting expressed confidence in a quick rebound for both players, stating, “Champion players should never be written off.” He regarded Kohli as one of the finest cricketers in the one-day format and highlighted that the duo would find ways to aid India in winning matches, likely ensuring their spots for the upcoming World Cup.

Ravi Shastri, former coach of India, also praised Kohli and Rohit, acknowledging their significant contributions to Indian cricket throughout the years. Shastri emphasized that their legacy is firmly established, dispelling concerns regarding their ongoing career. He reiterated that their reputation stems from years of consistent excellence both nationally and globally.

As the match in Adelaide approaches, it will be a true test of the players’ adaptability. Ponting believes that the challenging Australian bowling line-up will offer Kohli and Rohit a substantial opportunity to showcase their skills, resilience, and leadership on the pitch.

Despite the recent disappointment, both Ponting and Shastri are in agreement that Kohli and Rohit continue to be vital to India’s ODI contingent. Their experience, talent, and leadership qualities remain essential for guiding the team to success in the present series and beyond, proving that champions can always rise again after a setback.
