The Philippine government has voiced renewed alarms regarding China's escalating maritime activities following the sighting of a Chinese research ship near Cagayan province. This development occurs at a critical juncture as tensions surrounding Taiwan intensify and regional peace remains tenuous.

Reports from the Philippine Coast Guard revealed that an aircraft was dispatched to monitor and confront a Chinese deep-sea research vessel named Tan Suo Er Hao. The ship was located approximately 19 nautical miles off the coast of Cagayan, firmly within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone, which grants the Philippines special rights concerning marine resources and research operations.

The Coast Guard pilot attempted to communicate with the Chinese vessel via radio, seeking clarification on its research activities and whether it had secured approval from Manila for its operations. However, officials noted that there was no reply from the Chinese ship. Conducting scientific research without consent in another nation's exclusive zone breaches both Philippine and international laws.

Following the initial encounter, the ship was tracked as it moved eastward, eventually found over 55 nautical miles from Santa Ana town in Cagayan. This monitoring was facilitated through satellite technology, underscoring Manila's heightened capacity to oversee maritime activity within its waters.

Cagayan's geographical position is crucial, as it is in proximity to Taiwan and hosts one of nine military facilities accessible to U.S. forces under a defense agreement with the Philippines. In response, China's embassy in Manila stated that the vessel was merely conducting routine maneuvers and asserted its right to navigate through these waters according to international law.
