Pakistan International Airlines Is Back in the UK After 5 Years

On Saturday, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced the return of its direct flights to the UK, ending a five-year hiatus due to safety concerns. This development is a pivotal moment for PIA, which has diligently worked to regain its reputation and standing on the world stage.

The UK had suspended flights from PIA in June 2020 following the tragic crash of an Airbus A320 in Karachi that resulted in the loss of nearly 100 lives. This unfortunate incident, primarily due to human error, led to bans from not only the UK but also the European Union and the United States. In response, PIA has implemented significant changes, focusing on pilot training, aircraft maintenance, and safety protocols to align with international safety standards.

Restrictions on Pakistani carriers were lifted by the UK in July 2025, affirming that aviation safety measures were now “satisfactory and aligned with international norms.” PIA is now establishing a twice-weekly route from Islamabad to Manchester, with intentions to broaden its services to London and Birmingham in the near future.

At the Islamabad International Airport, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif applauded the resumption as a “major achievement” for PIA, underscoring the airline's perseverance in overcoming past challenges.

Earlier in November 2024, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had also lifted its ban on PIA, permitting the airline to commence flights to Paris this year—further indicating the rising confidence in PIA's upgraded safety and operational standards.

Founded in 1955, PIA was once the pride of Pakistan's national aviation. However, it faced difficulties over the years, including debt and management issues, which tarnished its reputation. Although the government has committed to privatizing PIA, past attempts have stalled due to valuation disputes.

The restart of PIA's services to the UK not only revitalizes essential international connections but also showcases PIA’s dedication to safety and professionalism in the global aviation landscape.
