Norovirus Outbreak Affects 103 Students at Foshan High School

A recent outbreak of norovirus has struck a senior high school in Foshan, a city in Guangdong Province, China, impacting 103 students, as confirmed by local health authorities on Saturday. Officials reported that all affected students are stable, with no serious or life-threatening conditions observed.

Students from Xinghui Middle School began displaying symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea in recent days. Preliminary medical evaluations identified the cause as norovirus, a highly infectious virus responsible for acute gastroenteritis.

In response to the outbreak, school officials have swiftly implemented health and safety protocols. The campus underwent complete disinfection, and rigorous health monitoring has begun. Daily attendance audits are being conducted to swiftly identify any new cases, while symptomatic students are being carefully monitored and treated as needed.

An epidemiological study is currently in progress to pinpoint the origin of the infection and evaluate potential transmission risks. Health experts are investigating how the virus disseminated among students, considering factors such as contaminated food, water, or close interactions.

According to health officials in Guangdong, the province typically experiences its annual norovirus epidemic season from October to March, posing heightened risks, especially in densely populated areas like schools, dormitories, and childcare centers.
