Tohoku Electric Power announced a precautionary halt of the No. 2 reactor at the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station on Friday, following the detection of radioactive steam within the turbine building.
As reported by local media, the steam was identified at approximately 5:10 pm during standard operations at the reactor. The utility assured that there was no leakage of radioactive materials into the surrounding environment and emphasized that the shutdown was an essential safety measure for thorough inspections.
Additionally, the company stated the incident had no connection to a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that hit northeastern Japan later that evening.
Notably, the No. 2 reactor had recently resumed operations after completing its regular maintenance inspections, with plans for commercial functioning set to commence on June 9.
Current evaluations are ongoing to uncover the precise reason behind the radioactive steam's presence.
