Ole Miss achieved a remarkable 39-34 victory over the highly ranked Georgia in the College Football Playoff (CFP) quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl, driven by impressive efforts from quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and kicker Lucas Carneiro.
Chambliss tallied 362 passing yards along with two touchdown throws, making crucial plays when it mattered most. The game concluded with Carneiro's decisive 47-yard field goal just as time ran out. This victory marked Ole Miss's second postseason win since Pete Golding took the head coach role following Lane Kiffin’s move to LSU on November 30.
Reflecting on their tenacity, Chambliss stated, “People doubted us before the season and even after our coach left. We just want to play ball and have fun, and that’s showing now.” Golding commended his team's focus, noting their ability to remain composed amid challenges.
Georgia, ranked No. 3, put up a strong fight under Coach Kirby Smart, who described the contest as an “incredible college football game” showcasing the competitive nature of the CFP. Despite trailing 34-24 in the late fourth quarter, Georgia managed to equalize before Carneiro's game-winner.
Noteworthy plays included Chambliss’s crucial 40-yard connection with De’Zhaun Stribling, effectively positioning for the winning field goal. A safety on Georgia’s last kickoff attempt also aided Ole Miss.
Both quarterbacks exhibited outstanding calm under pressure. Chambliss evaded defenders multiple times to sustain drives, whereas Georgia’s Gunner Stockton completed two fourth-down conversions and scored twice on rushing plays, despite being hit hard.
In total yards, Ole Miss outpaced Georgia 473 to 343. Harrison Wallace III led with 156 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Kewan Lacy contributed 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
With this win, Ole Miss progresses to the CFP semifinals where they will face Miami at the Fiesta Bowl, furthering their successful postseason journey under Golding’s guidance.
