Tragic Train Derailment in Oaxaca Claims 13 Lives, Nearly 100 Injured

In a devastating incident, at least 13 individuals lost their lives and around 100 sustained injuries after a passenger train derailed in Oaxaca, Mexico. The train, operating on the Interoceanic route that links the Gulf of Mexico with the Pacific, was carrying 241 passengers along with nine crew members at the time of the accident.

According to reports from the Mexican Navy, which oversees the railway system, 98 individuals were injured during this unfortunate event. Currently, 36 of those injured are receiving medical treatment in local facilities. The derailment occurred as the train navigated a sharp bend near Nizanda.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum shared her concerns regarding the situation, noting that five of the injured are in serious condition. Top government officials, including the Secretary of the Navy, are en route to the site to manage rescue and recovery operations.

Images and videos from the scene depict rescue officials assisting passengers in safely exiting the train, which had tilted off the tracks and partially hung over a cliff. The Interoceanic train involved in this accident comprises two locomotives and four passenger cars, essential for both passenger and freight transport between the Pacific port of Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast.

The Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, expressed his profound sorrow regarding the tragedy, confirming that state and federal agencies are closely coordinating efforts to provide aid and support to victims and their families.

Inaugurated two years ago as part of a governmental initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure and stimulating economic growth in southern Mexico, the Interoceanic rail link is crucial for modernizing transport across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, thereby creating a strategic trade corridor.

This rail line is integral to the government's vision for fostering regional economic development through improved connectivity between the Pacific and Atlantic. Despite the tragedy, officials remain dedicated to continuing the project's development, as rescue efforts and investigations proceed to address the needs of those impacted and uncover the causes of this derailment.
