Police in Noida have taken a builder, Abhay Kumar, into custody after 27-year-old Yuvraj Mehta tragically drowned when his SUV fell into a water-filled construction pit.
Kumar, who is among the proprietors of the construction firm overseeing the site, remains under investigation, while authorities are actively pursuing the second owner, Manish Kumar.
The incident happened in Sector 150, where a pit, originally excavated in 2021 for a mall basement, has been dangerous since water accumulated in it during halted construction work beginning in 2022.
Following the incident, Mehta’s father lodged an official complaint, prompting police action against the construction firms in question. One involved company stated they had transferred the project to new developers in 2019-2020 and secured necessary local authority approvals.
Investigators are examining the oversight of safety protocols and questioning why this vulnerable site was left unattended for so long. The search continues for the secondary owner involved in the endeavor.
In light of the accident, officials have advised all construction professionals and developers to reinforce safety standards at sites to avert similar tragedies in the future.
