Recent militant assaults on educational institutions in Nigeria have led to the abduction of over 80 children, sparking urgent concerns regarding student safety across the nation.

Local authorities and human rights advocates reveal that a primary school in the northeastern Borno State was attacked between Wednesday and Thursday, resulting in the kidnapping of numerous children from the Askira Uba and Chibok regions.

Amnesty International noted that this incident occurred in the village of Mussa, situated close to the Sambisa Forest, a known fortress for Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

Officials verified the abduction of at least 42 children during the Borno State attack, underlining the persistent threat presented by militant groups in northern Nigeria.

In addition, armed assailants targeted secondary schools in Oyo State, where at least 40 students were reportedly taken, with Amnesty International confirming that attacks occurred mere hours apart.

Peter Wabba, a local government official, indicated that the number of abducted children in Oyo could rise to 48. Families remain anxiously awaiting developments regarding their missing loved ones.

Law enforcement in Oyo State reported the arrest of three suspects linked to these school assaults, identified by local community members, while investigations continue to uncover potential additional perpetrators.

Human rights organizations caution that ongoing attacks on education facilities are leading children to abandon their studies. In some regions, families are reportedly facilitating early marriages for girls due to fears of abduction and violence.

School kidnappings have emerged as a critical security concern in Nigeria in recent years, with armed factions frequently assaulting educational establishments to amplify their presence, instill fear, and demand ransoms.
