Myanmar is rolling out modern air-conditioned DEMU passenger express trains to enhance railway connectivity, starting with the highly-trafficked Yangon to Mandalay route. Commencing on May 1, 2026, this initiative follows a directive from the President.

As stated by the Ministry of Transport, the new DEMU trains will operate under Myanmar Railways, aiming to offer a faster, more comfortable travel experience for passengers journeying between major cities. This move is part of broader efforts to revamp the nation's public transport landscape.

The Yangon to Mandalay service will feature crucial stops at locations like Bago, Taungoo, Nay Pyi Taw, Yamethin, and Kyaukse, enhancing the accessibility of key regions for travelers.

Ticket pricing is set at 48,000 kyats for upper class and 34,000 kyats for first class, catering to diverse passenger needs for comfort and affordability.

Furthermore, Myanmar Railways plans to introduce DEMU services on the Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw route, with multiple stops that connect important hubs for both administrative and commercial purposes.

Travelers can conveniently book tickets via the Online Railways Ticketing and Payment system, enhancing the ticket purchase experience.

As passenger numbers rise, railway officials have signaled plans for network expansion, which will see additional train coaches and routes introduced to improve overall travel capacity.

The launch of these modern DEMU trains signifies Myanmar’s dedication to refining its transportation framework, providing safer, more efficient, and comfortable travel experiences for all.
