During Thursday’s Question Period in the House of Commons, Canada’s newly installed Prime Minister Mark Carney made a unexpected slip-up that had MPs on both sides of the aisle chuckling.
As he began responding, Carney addressed Parliament by greeting the Speaker of the House, saying, “Mr. Prime Minister” instead of the correct title. The room burst into laughter—and even Carney couldn’t help smiling before catching himself and saying, “Sorry!”
He made a light-hearted comment: “Battlefield promotion there,” which only added to the good-natured atmosphere. He quickly corrected himself, addressing the Speaker properly as Mr. Speaker before carrying on with his remarks.
The mix-up didn’t last long, but it’s being remembered as a rare moment of levity during Carney’s early days in office. A clip of the moment went viral online, showing MPs from all parties grinning—or outright laughing—at the gaffe.
This light-hearted moment contrasted with the serious tone of the day—Carney was speaking about pressing issues like national infrastructure and trade.
Carney hasn’t been in politics long—he became Prime Minister earlier this spring after winning the April election—and is adjusting quickly to the traditions of Parliament. Still, this small slip showed that even experienced leaders sometimes stumble—and that a bit of humour can lighten the tone in high-stakes settings.
