Morocco has proudly inaugurated the remarkable Mohammed VI Tower, a stunning 55-story edifice that now graces the skyline of the capital area. At 820 feet tall and with an investment of approximately $700 million, this tower epitomizes the nation’s expanding global aspirations.
Named in honor of King Mohammed VI, the tower is designed to evoke the image of a rocket poised for takeoff. It houses a premier Waldorf Astoria, a variety of offices, luxurious apartments, retail shops, and dining venues.
Situated in Salé, just across the river from Rabat, this structure presents breathtaking views of the Atlantic coast and the dual cities. The project spanned eight years, enlisting over 2,500 workers from numerous countries.
Leila Haddaoui, director of the development firm O Tower, shared that this initiative is projected to generate about 450 direct jobs and an additional 3,500 indirectly, thus bolstering the local economy.
Close to the Grand Theatre of Rabat, designed by the acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid, the tower further enhances the contemporary image of the region.
This construction is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to boost tourism, positioning Rabat and Salé firmly on the international stage. As an already popular tourist location in Africa, the country aims to draw in more visitors, particularly in anticipation of co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The tower also represents Morocco’s increasing prominence in Africa and the Middle East. It was envisioned by billionaire Othmane Benjelloun, head of Bank of Africa, inspired by his experience at NASA during the Apollo 12 mission.
Nevertheless, some detractors point out that such developments tend to focus on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, leaving other regions grappling with economic issues, including high unemployment and inadequate public services.
Ultimately, the Mohammed VI Tower stands as a courageous testament to Morocco’s vision for development, harmonizing modern infrastructure with economic progress and international ambition.
