BCCI Ignores Mohammed Shami's Impressive Ranji Trophy Performance

Post by : Mina Carter

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has made a significant impact in the Ranji Trophy 2025/26, claiming 15 wickets across his initial three matches. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opted to exclude him from the upcoming squad set to compete against South Africa.

Coach Urges Fair Review

Shami's coach, Mohammed Badruddin, has voiced his disappointment, suggesting that decisions regarding Shami’s selection were made in advance. According to Badruddin, the BCCI's argument regarding fitness is unfounded, insisting that Shami's exceptional form proves his readiness for selection.

“It’s evident he’s being overlooked. He’s performing well; players can’t be deemed unfit when they’re taking 15 wickets in two games. This is a clear case of the selectors ignoring him,” Badruddin remarked.

Issues with Selection Criteria

Badruddin criticized the selection process, asserting that the choice of the Test squad seems influenced by T20 statistics instead of domestic performances like those in the Ranji Trophy. He described the justification for Shami's exclusion as “wholly incorrect” and “predetermined.”

Shami's Track Record Underscores His Worth

Having last represented India in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand on March 9, 2025, where he was the joint second-highest wicket-taker with nine wickets in five matches, Shami's absence from both the India A and senior teams for the South Africa series is surprising.

Coach Optimistic About Shami's Future

While frustrated by the current situation, Badruddin remains hopeful about Shami's return to the national team. He asserted that Shami’s skills and history, particularly in World Cups, make a compelling case for his reinstatement.

“Absolutely, he can come back. I’m entirely confident he will; when he does, he will return in a way that will impress many,” said Badruddin.

Shami is also set to feature in the IPL 2026 mini-auction following a mixed performance in IPL 2025 with Sunrisers Hyderabad, providing him yet another opportunity to showcase his capabilities.
