On Saturday, Russia unleashed missiles and drones against Kyiv and various other Ukrainian regions, just hours ahead of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s planned discussions with former U.S. President Donald Trump. These talks, set to take place in Florida, focus on negotiating a potential resolution to nearly four years of conflict, the deadliest since World War Two in Europe.
Throughout Kyiv, explosions were reported as Ukrainian air defense systems engaged incoming threats. Russian drones targeted not only the capital but also areas in the northeastern and southern parts of the country. An air raid alert persisted for several hours, resulting in at least eight injuries.
The missile strikes also prompted the temporary suspension of operations at two airports in southeastern Poland—Rzeszow and Lublin—due to the mobilization of Polish fighter jets. There has been no official comment from Russia regarding these attacks. Earlier in the week, Russian forces intensified their assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and increased attacks near Odesa, the country’s primary port.
Territorial control remains a challenging aspect of the peace negotiations. Zelenskiy indicated that a 20-point peace plan backed by the U.S. is approximately 90% ready for implementation. Key to this is an agreement for security guarantees between Ukraine and the U.S., crucial after previous assurances fell short in preventing further hostilities. Zelenskiy hopes significant decisions can be achieved before the year's end.
In the lead-up to the meeting, a call is scheduled between Zelenskiy, Trump, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with other European leaders. Kyiv is advocating for long-term, binding security assurances, while the U.S. has proposed a 15-year renewable agreement. Trump has revealed his optimistic outlook for the discussions, expressing a desire to connect with Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly.
Major topics also include the fate of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, currently under Russian control, and the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Moscow demands Ukraine withdraw from certain portions of Donetsk, while Kyiv seeks a cessation of hostilities along existing frontlines. A compromise suggested by the U.S. involves establishing a free economic zone should Ukraine pull back from some territories, although this is still under discussion.
Zelenskiy mentioned that if the U.S. does not extend full support for Ukraine’s territorial claims, the 20-point peace initiative may be subjected to a public referendum, contingent on Russia agreeing to a 60-day ceasefire to allow necessary preparations. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov acknowledged discrepancies between the two countries’ plans but noted that negotiations are at a crucial juncture. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed discussions with U.S. officials about the proposals, though he did not disclose Russia’s stance.
The recent attacks highlight the pressing need for a resolution. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, millions of Ukrainians continue to face threats from missile and drone assaults. The forthcoming meeting between Zelenskiy and Trump represents a vital moment in determining if diplomacy can ultimately bring closure to this devastating conflict.
