On May 12 and 13, 2026, media professionals across Turkmenistan gathered for a significant media literacy training event in Ashgabat, organized by the OSCE Centre. This initiative aimed to sharpen their abilities in critical thinking, digital security, fact-checking, and ethical journalism in today's media landscape.

The training convened representatives from regional print media, TV stations, and online platforms. It was designed to address the rising challenges posed by AI technologies, the spread of misinformation, and harmful content on digital platforms.

As rapid technological advancements reshape journalism, organizers stressed the importance of media literacy. Participants learned to discern false information, critically analyze digital content, and produce trustworthy reports.

William Leaf, Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, highlighted the essential role journalists fulfill in society, pinpointing their responsibility to provide the public with reliable information amidst rampant manipulation.

The sessions featured trainers from the nation along with international media expert Adil Jalilov from Kazakhstan’s MediaNet International Center, covering practical aspects like fact-checking, media ethics, and digital security tools, including the use of AI in content creation.

The program also emphasized UNESCO’s ethical guidelines and responsible reporting, equipping participants with modern verification techniques to safeguard against cyber threats and misinformation campaigns.

The OSCE Centre has been a steady proponent of Turkmenistan's National Human Rights Action Plan, pushing for media freedom and education. A group of 20 national trainers has already been established to extend training to journalists, students, bloggers, and public officials across Turkmenistan.

Officials noted that such educational initiatives are crucial for journalism’s future in Turkmenistan, aiding young media professionals in acquiring the skills necessary to protect the information landscape and effectively respond to emerging global digital challenges.
