Maria Corina Machado, the prominent Venezuelan opposition figure and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, experienced a serious vertebra fracture while undertaking a treacherous journey from Venezuela to Norway last week. The 58-year-old leader faced significant dangers aboard a small fishing boat as she sailed toward the prestigious ceremony in Oslo.

Reports indicate that Machado’s vessel encountered severe waves, leading to an extremely hazardous crossing. Her spokeswoman, Claudia Macera, confirmed the injury but mentioned no additional information would be shared beyond the details provided by the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

Despite her injury, Machado displayed incredible determination upon her arrival in Oslo. Shortly after landing in the early hours of Thursday, she endeavored to greet her supporters outside her hotel, even climbing over a barrier despite the discomfort from her spinal injury.

Machado had openly expressed concerns for her safety during the journey, underscoring the perilous nature of her travel. She received swift medical care at Oslo University Hospital in Ulleval, where she underwent examinations by healthcare professionals.

Unfortunately, her injury prevented her from attending the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony on Wednesday, thus delaying her involvement in the highly anticipated event. Observers and her supporters have commended her resilient spirit, noting the powerful symbolism of her arrival in spite of the serious adversity she faced.
