Manchester City has secured the signing of 25-year-old England centre-back Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, penning a five-and-a-half-year deal. This acquisition comes as City seeks to bridge the gap with Premier League frontrunners Arsenal.

While financial specifics remain undisclosed, reports indicate the transfer fee stands at approximately £20 million (RM108.8 million). Guehi, who had half a year left on his Crystal Palace contract, is set to make a significant impact.

The arrival of Guehi is particularly vital for City, who are grappling with injuries affecting key defenders such as Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and John Stones. He marks the club's second acquisition during the January transfer period, alongside winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.

Hugo Viana, City’s director of football, stated, “Marc has been one of the standout defenders in English football for a considerable time. We are excited to have him at Manchester City. He is young, a natural leader, a top professional, and keen to develop further.”

Guehi’s signing is a pivotal move for City, especially since he was on the verge of joining Liverpool last year before the deal fell through. He has also garnered interest from leading European clubs, including Bayern Munich.

A product of Chelsea's youth academy, Guehi made the move to Crystal Palace in 2021. He played 188 appearances for the club, eventually earning the captaincy, and led Palace to their first-ever FA Cup victory last season, also lifting the Community Shield in August.

Guehi has earned 26 caps for England since his debut in 2022, showcasing his talent in Euro 2024, where he featured in every match except the quarter-finals due to suspension.

“This transfer feels like a culmination of my dedication,” Guehi remarked. “I am now part of the best club in England with a fantastic squad. It’s a surreal experience.”

Guehi missed Palace's recent 2-1 defeat against Sunderland. After the match, manager Oliver Glasner, who will depart at the season’s end, expressed concerns over the club’s leadership, stating that his players felt “completely abandoned.”

Currently, City is positioned second in the Premier League, tallying 43 points from 22 matches, trailing seven points behind Arsenal. Their forthcoming match is a Champions League encounter against Bodo/Glimt today, followed by a Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
