In a pivotal advancement for the Philippines’ energy sector, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Monday a noteworthy natural gas discovery at Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1), located approximately 6 kilometers east of the current Malampaya gas field near Palawan.

As reported by local news outlets, this marks the nation's first significant natural gas discovery in over a decade.

Estimates suggest that the new well contains around 98 billion cubic feet of natural gas, capable of generating about 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. This energy is sufficient to power nearly 5.7 million homes or approximately 200,000 schools on an annual basis.

This discovery is part of an $893 million drilling initiative spearheaded by Prime Energy, under the ownership of Filipino businessman Enrique Razon. Early tests at the site revealed gas flows of about 60 million cubic feet per day, indicating a robust potential for production.

MAE-1 is set to prolong the operational lifespan of the Malampaya gas field, which currently fulfills 35 to 40 percent of Luzon’s electricity demands. This new find will also aid the nation in decreasing its reliance on imported coal, fostering a cleaner, more stable energy mix.

The drilling location lies within the West Philippine Sea, a region crucial for the country’s future energy development strategies.
