In a significant environmental initiative, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), in partnership with the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority (DECCA), has successfully planted 600 mangrove trees at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary. This effort underscores Dubai's dedication to environmental stewardship and climate solutions.

The event witnessed the active involvement of 239 volunteers, who generously contributed 478 hours of their time. Among the participants were DEWA staff, their families, personnel from DEWA’s subsidiaries, and students from DEWA Academy, showcasing a robust community engagement in conservation activities.

This initiative is part of DEWA's ongoing program to restore and safeguard mangrove habitats along Dubai's coast. From February 2023 through December 2025, DEWA envisions planting 13,950 mangrove trees in the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, with close to 1,900 volunteers expected to participate. These activities reflect DEWA's strategy to utilize nature-based solutions for sustainability and marine ecosystem protection.

Mangroves are essential for coastal defense against erosion, support diverse marine life, and mitigate carbon emissions. By enhancing mangrove coverage, DEWA aims to bolster ecological resilience and align with the national environmental objectives.

This initiative supports the ‘Plant the Emirates’ National Programme, aimed at encouraging afforestation and sustainable agricultural practices across the UAE. Additionally, it aligns with the ambitious national goal of planting 100 million mangrove trees by 2030, a cornerstone of the UAE’s environmental strategy.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, DEWA’s Managing Director and CEO, reaffirmed the authority's commitment to boosting biodiversity through expanding green areas across the nation. He highlighted the importance of daily community participation in agriculture and reforestation for fostering long-term sustainability.

Al Tayer also stressed the critical role of mangroves as invaluable natural resources for coastal stability and marine ecosystems. He stated that DEWA continues to collaborate closely with key partners to restore mangrove habitats, ensure their sustainability, and protect local ecosystems through effective, research-oriented strategies.

Participants praised DEWA for its efforts in promoting environmental volunteerism and awareness. Many expressed that these initiatives offer rewarding opportunities to directly contribute to conservation efforts for both land and sea.

Through ongoing partnerships, community participation, and large-scale planting projects, DEWA is significantly contributing to fulfilling Dubai's environmental objectives and reinforcing the UAE's leadership in sustainable development and climate initiatives.
