In an electrifying conclusion to Stage 3 of the Itzulia Basque Country, UAE Team Emirates-XRG's Igor Arrieta showcased an impressive ride, finishing as the runner-up following a thrilling uphill sprint in Basauri. Ineos Grenadiers’ Axel Laurance ultimately claimed victory, surging ahead in the final stretch.
The excitement started from the very beginning, with a tough contest among the riders to form a pivotal breakaway. Arrieta displayed remarkable determination, fighting hard to secure his spot in a select group that managed to pull away from the peloton.
Once they established a lead, the young Basque cyclist played an instrumental role in widening the gap. By the time they approached the penultimate hill, the breakaway had built a solid advantage of around 1 minute 30 seconds, laying the groundwork for a tactical and grueling finish.
Scaling the demanding Bikotx Gane climb, Arrieta ramped up the pace alongside a few key riders, including Laurance. Their combined efforts allowed them to extend their lead to nearly two minutes as they neared the final ascent of Sarasola.
