Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen began his season on a high note at the Malaysia Open Super 750, making it to the second round after an intense match against Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason Teh.
The 24-year-old from Almora, who had an impressive previous season with an Australian Open title and a finalist finish at the Hong Kong Open, battled for 70 minutes to overcome world No. 21 Teh. The match was a thrilling contest where Sen won the first game 21-16, lost the second 15-21, and rallied to clinch the final game 21-14.
With this victory, Sen, who sits at World No. 13, is set to face either sixth seed Christo Popov from France or Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu in the next round.
Meanwhile, in women's singles, Malvika Bansod, returning from a six-month injury break due to her left knee, encountered a challenging match against Thailand’s former world champion and seventh seed, Ratchanok Intanon. Bansod struggled with the match, ultimately falling 11-21, 11-21 in the first round.
Later, India's Ayush Shetty, who claimed victory at the US Open Super 300 last year, is scheduled to compete against Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia, the bronze medallist from the Paris Olympics, in an anticipated matchup.
