Kyrgyzstan Pursues $193 Million Investment in Water Infrastructure

Kyrgyzstan has embarked on a new strategy to secure substantial international investments in its water sector, following high-level discussions with World Bank and International Development Association officials.

During a recent meeting, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry, Erlist Akunbekov, highlighted efforts to enhance water management and extend irrigation systems nationwide.

The officials evaluated the proposed National Irrigation Investment Program, which is designed to inject approximately 193 million US dollars into Kyrgyzstan. This initiative aims to update irrigation networks, bolster water resource management, and fortify food security across the nation.

Such investments are expected to replace outdated irrigation infrastructures and enhance agricultural efficiency in various regions. With increasing agricultural and environmental pressures, water management has become a top government priority.

Additionally, plans were discussed to create technical and design documentation for the Omuko Irrigation Canal in Naryn Region's At-Bashy District and the Chon Talas Canal in the Talas Region.

Officials confirmed that $650,000 in grant funding would be allocated to facilitate the preparation of these canal projects. This financial support is anticipated to accelerate the planning and development phases for future infrastructure enhancements.

As discussions wrapped up, Erlist Akunbekov and World Bank representatives formalized their agreements and detailed next steps for cooperation in the water sector.

The Kyrgyz government emphasized that partnerships with international financial institutions are critical to its long-term goals of enhancing water security, modernizing agriculture, and attracting sustainable foreign investment in vital infrastructure initiatives.
