In a groundbreaking initiative, Kyrgyzstan has launched a pilot project connecting a remote mountain school to the Starlink satellite internet network. Unveiled by Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Adylbek Kasymaliev via video conference from Bishkek on May 25, 2026, this project epitomizes a significant advancement in bridging the digital divide in remote areas of the nation.
The comprehensive school located in the high-altitude village of Enilchek in the Issyk-Kul region is now the first educational institution in Kyrgyzstan to benefit from high-speed Starlink internet service. The unique geographical challenges and absence of stable terrestrial communication meant that the school had been without reliable internet access for many years.
During the event, Kasymaliev extended his congratulations to students and teachers, emphasizing the importance of equal access to education. He noted that the government prioritizes digital education and improving internet access, especially for children in isolated mountain regions throughout Kyrgyzstan.
As part of this initiative, five modern computers were donated to the school to facilitate enhanced learning and digital proficiency. Kasymaliev instructed the Ministry of Education to expedite the integration of the Enilchek school into the national educational information framework and ensure access to digital resources and services.
Currently, officials report that just six schools in the entire nation lack internet connectivity. The government aims to address this issue soon as part of a broader digital transformation agenda. Authorities are confident that satellite technology can effectively resolve communication challenges in remote mountainous regions where conventional infrastructure is often unfeasible.
Kyrgyzstan officially joined the Starlink global coverage map on May 23, 2026, following necessary technical and legal arrangements. The local telecom partner, ElKat LLC, played a crucial role in establishing the infrastructure meeting international standards for satellite internet service within the country.
This pilot initiative stems from a presidential decree issued in October 2025 regarding non-geostationary satellite systems. While SpaceX is currently the primary technical provider, Kyrgyz authorities have indicated openness to partnerships with other international tech firms that align with safety and quality benchmarks.
The introduction of Starlink internet in Enilchek is anticipated to be a key milestone in Kyrgyzstan's digital evolution, with hopes that it will enhance educational, communicational, and economic prospects for residents of the region's most isolated locales.
